Three Major Causes Of Nail Fungus And How To Avoid Them

Over half of all nail problems and diseases are caused by fungal infections.  The disease is unsightly and progressive.  If you have an infection it’s important that you take action and choose between the various treatment options available to you.  These range range from home remedies, to over the counter nail fungus treatment options to prescription medications.  Prevention is of course your first option.  So in this article we set out the three main causes of nail fungus and how to prevent them.

Fungal infections can be easily picked up at an unsanitary nail salon.  The infection is usually spread by the use of unsterilized tools or an unsterilized nail bath.  Take extra care to choose a well-run, clean salon that disinfects all equipment between clients.  You could even choose to bring along your own nail instruments.    In addition, make sure there is no damage to the cuticle or skin around the nail as a result of an overly vicious manicure or pedicure.  Small breakage areas in the skin can offer a starting point for a fungal infection to take hold.

Communal gyms and swimming pools are a second major place where you can contract a nail fungus.  You will be safe from infection in a chlorinated pool but always wear thongs in the showers or changing rooms.  Fungal organisms grow quickly in damp, dark conditions so make sure you are protected.   You may even choose to go one step further and wear a rubber (neoprene) foot protector in communal bathing areas.

Another major cause of nail fungus of the toe is through a cross-infection from athlete’s foot.  This is because some fungal infections of the nail are caused by the same micro-organism that causes athlete’s foot.  If you have athlete’s foot, make sure you treat it quickly.  It’s far easier to get rid of athlete’s foot than a fungal infection that has taken hold.  Keep you feet clean and dry at all times and try and expose your nails each day to sunlight.

Awareness of the main causes of nail fungus is critical in holding this nail disorder at bay.  Take the few extra steps outlined in this article and you’ll be better positioned to avoid getting an infection.
