Firstly, before attempting at home treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids, it’s important that the patient is absolutely positive the bleeding is from hemorrhoids. Rectal bleeding can be a sign of a dangerous and serious condition and should not be left to guessing. If the patient is unsure of the source of the rectal bleeding, then he or she should seek medical advice before assuming and treating for hemorrhoids at home.
Bleeding hemorrhoids is an affliction that effects millions every year. This common yet bothersome condition can often be treated at home and with certain lifestyle changes, can be prevented as well.
Bleeding hemorrhoids can stem from internal or external hemorrhoids. Internal bleeding hemorrhoids symptoms include bright red blood streaks on toilet paper after wiping. Bright red blood in the toilet or on the stool’s surface after a bowel movement. There are other symptoms that include itching, swelling and pain.
If the pain is severe. If it’s excruciating, then it’s quite possible an internal bleeding hemorrhoid has swelled up and is bulging from the anus. If this happens, the muscles that control the anus opening, can cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. This results in a strangulated hemorrhoid. This is a serious and painful condition that requires emergency medical care.
Bleeding hemorrhoids can often be healed at home with over-the-counter creams, aspiring free pain relievers and hot sitz baths. The sitz baths should contain Epsom salt or baking soda and should be taken at least 3 and up to 7 times per day. This will keep the area clean, prevent the need for harsh wiping and will soothe pain and discomfort. If after one week, the symptoms have not begun to subside, patients should check with their heath care provider for medical advice and possible proper diagnosis.
To prevent bleeding hemorrhoids, eat fiber and drink lots of water. This change in diet may take a few days to take effect and may take some getting used to. The important thing to remember is that the more water and fiber that is put into the body, the less need there will be for straining to pass stool. The less straining, the less chance of hemorrhoids. It’s that simple. Also, cut out caffeine as much as possible and get daily exercise in the form of walking or swimming. Constipation is the leading cause of hemorrhoids and keeping the stool wet by drinking plenty of water can prevent that constipation and thus, prevent the hemorrhoids.
