How To Avoid Obesity and Back Problems In Kids

How many times have we heard our parents tell us to sit up straight and not slouch? This advice is even more relevant to today’s generation of kids because of the times we live in. We live in a tech society where all the entertainment is inhouse at our disposal. We have TV, video gaming consoles and computers. Who needs to get out of the house for entertainment? No wonder the health experts are decrying the rise in obesity in today’s kids.  However, another health issue on the rise is back problems in kids.

Back problems are usually associated with adults and seniors as the wear and tear of age catches up with us. However, studies show that kids not even hitting double digits in age are showing characteristics of having a bad back. This includes what is known as the forward head posture where the head is displaced forward and the shoulders are hunched over with the chest caved in. Obviously, this goes against the usual good posture advice of head up, shoulders back and chest out.

However, if you’re a concerned parent, things are not too dire that you cannot correct. There is back support underwear out in the market and other posture aids geared towards kids as well. But before you purchase these items, go to a chiropractor and get an assessment on your child from a professional. Sometimes, these aids are not needed and good old fashion physical activity is all you need.

Limit the time the child spends in front of the TV and computer. If he has these items in his room, then these need to moved elsewhere. Granted, the computer is where kids do their homework nowadays but make sure the computer desk is in an ergonomic setup with the chair and screen properly positioned and the desk is at the correct height. Furthermore, make sure your kid knows to step away for breaks after each twenty minutes.

As you can see, there are little things we can do to improve our health and it begins with developing healthy habits as a child. The most important thing is not to be sucked up in the technology lifestyle and know that you can have fun outside as well.
