Watching a child suffer is a very hard experience to deal with. As parents we want to protect our children as much as possible and help them in any way we can. This is especially true with migraine headaches since these afflictions are often very painful and hard to deal with even for an adult. As a parent of a child with migraines the only thing you can do to provide migraine treatment is have patience, help them recognize the symptoms, and keep them as relaxed as possible until the headache goes away.
Migraine headaches can be very severe, and the pain can often be excruciating for a child. Children do not know how to deal with pain and may be very distraught or angry. Losing patience with the child who is suffering during a migraine headache will only worsen the situation. No matter how bad the outbursts from a child you must remember they are trying to deal with pain in which they have no control over. You yourself must stay calm no matter what.
In addition, you must help the child recognize when the onset of a migraine is occurring. If the child has medication for the migraines it is vital for them to receive the medication as soon as the migraine starts to set in. This will help them get over the migraine as quickly as possible. It is important for the parent to keep a journal or a diary of everything a child does and eats or drinks. Once a migraine starts to occur you may be able to refer back to the journal to see what may have caused it. Keeping track of what triggers a migraine attack can help avoid these triggers in the future.
Finally, the only thing you can do to help a child with a migraine is to keep them as relaxed as possible. Always have a room designated for them to relax in. This room should be as dark and quiet as possible. It must also be very comfortable. If there are other smaller children in the house it is wise to try to get them out if possible. Someone suffering from a migraine needs absolute quiet and comfort until the pain passes. Loud noises and light may only serve to worsen the attack and prolong it. Following these little tips will not eliminate the migraine headaches your child suffers from; however, it may help to relieve some of the pain and help you deal with your child’s condition a little easier.
