Achieving a Healthy Blood Pressure Range

Blood pressure is the measurement that determines the force applied to the outer walls of your blood vessels by circulating blood. It is often used as a determinate of principle vital sign. Your heart pumps blood throughout your body and the blood pressure will vary between systolic (maximum) and diastolic (minimum) pressures. A person’s blood pressure is generally measured at the upper arm on the inside of the elbow. This area is generally accepted as the most conclusive to measure. When measuring a person’s blood pressure the common measurement is systolic over diastolic pressure. For instance, one-twenty over eighty is the ideal measurement.

To measure the upper arm, a device known as a sphygmomanometer is used. The values reported are in terms of millimeters of mercury due to the historical method of using the height of mercury in a column. New electronic and aneroid devices do not use mercury, but the historical increment stuck so we still use mmHg. Blood pressure is never static and always contains natural variations as each heart beat occurs. The range that is most commonly referred to as “healthy” lies between 120 to 140 systolic (mmHg) and 80 to 90 diastolic (mmHg). The most important reference point is the mean arterial pressure over time. Taking a single, random measurement will not give you an accurate picture of your blood pressure range. There are various methods to achieve a mean arterial pressure, the most tedious being multiple check ups at a clinic. The easiest method is purchasing a blood pressure machine to use at home. They are not terribly expensive and it gives you the best/easiest method to monitor your blood pressure. If you regularly check your blood pressure, you are far more likely to catch the problem before it does any serious damage to your circulatory system. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure range is very important to pursue and can be the difference between a good quality of life in your later years and a poor quality of life.
